Program information for families

The CDBS provides individual benefits for a range of services including examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. Benefits are not available for orthodontic or cosmetic dental work and cannot be paid for any services provided in a hospital.

Eligible children will have access to a benefit cap of $1,000 over a two calendar year period.

To be eligible a child must be aged between 2-17 years and their family must receive Family Tax Benefit Part A or a relevant Australian Government payment.

Dentist2You can check your child’s eligibility for free dental check-up under the government’s CDBS, or alternatively, you can confirm your child’s eligibility and balance amount by accessing your Medicare online account at check your Medicare online account through myGovor calling the Medicare general enquiries line on 132 011.

CDBS covers up to $1,000 over 2 calendar years for basic dental services under CDBS. The services we will cover include:

  • check-ups
  • X-rays
  • cleaning
  • fissure sealing
  • fillings
  • root canals
  • extractions.

The 2-year period

You can claim up to $1,000 for each child over 2 consecutive calendar years.

The 2-year period starts at the beginning of the calendar year in which your child both:

  • becomes eligible
  • gets their first dental service.

You can use the full amount of $1,000 in the first year. If you don’t use the full $1,000 in the first year, you can use it in the second year. You can only use it in the second year if your child remains eligible.

If you don’t use the full amount within the 2 calendar years, you can’t use the remaining funds. You’ll have to wait for a new 2-year cover period to start.
